The jury summed up in a few words why they found this year's award-winning films remarkable.

The jury has made its selection at the 34th MEDIAWAVE Another Connection International Film and Music Gathering! This year, more than 700 films were submitted from all over the world. A selection of the winning films will be screened today from 4.30 pm at the Cirkó-Gejzír cinema in Budapest, tickets here. The awards ceremony will take place tonight from 9.30 pm at the Barn Cinema of the Őrhegy manor house in Ravazd.

20 countries, 72 selected films, 3 evenings of colourful selections - a cinematic cavalcade in the heart of Budapest with more than 400 visitors. This is how the 33rd Mediawave International Film and Music Festival launched this year.

Founded in 1991, the Mediawave Foundation was originally created to promote visual culture, but from its second year it gradually expanded its activities to include other artistic disciplines. Our focus has been on ethnic and improvisational music, to the extent that since the early 2000s our main event has been called  Mediawave International Film and Music Festival.

Exciting topics will be explored this year at the FÉNYÍRÓK FESZTIVÁLJA | ANOTHER CONNECTION, the 33rd MEDIAWAVE International Film Competition & Student Film Festival. The film festival will take place at the Cirko-Gejzír Film Theatre in Budapest from 25-27 April 2023. 

This year will be the 33rd edition of the MEDIAWAVE International Film and Music Festival. Bringing together international filmmakers, the event will make films available to the wide public over a few days, from exciting emerging filmmakers to established filmmakers from all around the world.

On 5th-6th of March, the judging of Mediawave's international film competition - except for music and environmentally conscious documentaries - took place in Kiscsősz, with the participation of 60 novice, master's and postgraduate students from 15 film universities. Based on a previous selection from the pre-jury, six juries evaluated the movies in the categories of:

   - short film

   - animated film

   - experimental film

   - short documentary

   - documentary

   - educational and televisional documentary.

The juries have made their decision, but the awards will only be announced and distributed to the chosen international filmmakers at a professional forum in Kiscsősz on 4th-7th of May, which will also be Mediawave's main film venue. However, the task of those who took part in the non-standard jury, which aim is to help the professional film training, did not end with the evaluation of the movies. They will contact the winners (without mentioning the type of their prize) and organize their arrival to the festival, as well as explore the further potential of each creators and films, which can be transferred to workshops and master classes on the event.

During the weekend, the new organizing team also held talks with the students and teachers from almost all film universities in the Carpathian Basin on the topic of a future university film festival that they will try to create together besides Mediawave's international film program.
